In a chilling incident that has shaken South Delhi, a 19-year-old former domestic worker allegedly returned to his previous employer’s residence and committed a brutal crime involving rape, murder, and robbery. The accused, identified as Rahul Meena, had been hired eight months ago by the family of a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer through a reference. He was dismissed after repeated complaints of borrowing money and failing to repay it.
What the family believed was the end of their association turned into a nightmare a month later.
According to police, Meena secretly returned to the house in the upscale Kailash Hills locality on Wednesday morning. Familiar with the household’s routine, he knew the officer and his spouse would be out for their daily walk and gym session, leaving their 22-year-old daughter alone at home.
Investigators say Meena used his prior knowledge of the house, including a hidden key card kept in a shoe rack, to gain entry around 6:30 am. Within minutes, he was inside.
Inside the house, Meena allegedly raped the young woman, a UPSC aspirant, before strangling her with a phone charger. The crime, described by police as premeditated and opportunistic, was carried out within an hour.
CCTV footage later revealed that Meena changed his clothes and shoes after the crime, likely to avoid detection. Blood-stained garments were replaced with clothing belonging to the victim’s brother. He then fled the scene around 7:20 am.
Authorities say he also stole approximately ₹2 to ₹2.5 lakh from the house before escaping.
The victim was discovered by her family under suspicious circumstances, prompting immediate police intervention. Evidence from CCTV footage and forensic analysis quickly pointed to Meena, who had prior access to the home.
Joint Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar confirmed that crucial evidence had been recovered and that further details would be shared as the investigation progresses.
Initial findings suggest Meena had a history of problematic behavior. He was reportedly addicted to online gaming and frequently borrowed money from other domestic workers and acquaintances without repayment. This pattern of behavior ultimately led to his dismissal from the IRS officer’s household.
Even more disturbing is the revelation that Meena may have committed another sexual assault just hours before the Delhi incident. Police sources indicate that he was in Alwar prior to arriving in the capital, where he allegedly raped a woman known to him—his friend’s wife. A case has already been registered in connection with that incident.
To fund his travel, Meena reportedly sold a mobile phone for ₹10,000 and hired a vehicle to Delhi for ₹6,000, later fleeing without paying the driver.
The incident has raised serious concerns about background verification and security protocols for domestic workers, especially in high-profile households. The fact that the accused could exploit prior familiarity with the home’s layout and routines underscores the risks of inadequate safeguards.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to piece together the full sequence of events and ensure swift justice. Meanwhile, the case stands as a grim reminder of how trust, once broken, can have devastating consequences.
