In a devastating series of events early this morning, Karnataka witnessed two separate road accidents that resulted in the loss of at least 15 lives and left several others injured.
The first incident occurred around 4:00 am near Gulapura village on the Yellapura Highway in Uttara Kannada district. A truck carrying vegetables lost control and collided with a tripper vehicle, causing the vegetable-laden truck to plunge into a 50-meter-deep valley. The victims, all fruit vendors from Savanur, were en route to the Yellapura fair to sell their produce. Tragically, 11 individuals lost their lives on the spot, and 20 others sustained critical injuries in the mishap.
According to Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police M Narayana, the accident transpired when the truck driver maneuvered to make way for another vehicle but veered too far left, leading to the fatal plunge. He highlighted the absence of protective barriers along the road in the valley, which may have exacerbated the severity of the incident. The injured were swiftly transported to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi for urgent medical care.
In a separate incident in Raichur district, four individuals lost their lives and ten sustained injuries after a vehicle overturned near Sindhanur. The exact circumstances of this accident are under investigation by Sindhanur Traffic Police.
Following these tragic events, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced compensation of Rs 3 lakh each to the families of the deceased in both accidents. Additionally, arrangements have been made for the free treatment of those injured in the accidents, underscoring the state government's commitment to supporting the affected families during this difficult time.
These incidents serve as stark reminders of the dangers inherent in road travel, especially in areas where infrastructure and safety measures may be inadequate. Authorities continue to investigate the causes of both accidents to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The local community and authorities are rallying together to support the families of the victims and provide necessary assistance to those affected by these unfortunate incidents.
