A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday evening near Pachora town in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, resulting in the loss of 13 lives and leaving 15 others injured in a heartbreaking train accident.
The mishap occurred when panic ensued among passengers aboard the Mumbai-bound Pushpak Express, triggered by an alarm chain-pulling incident. Mistaking a perceived threat of fire, several passengers hurriedly disembarked onto the adjacent tracks. Tragically, they were struck by the Karnataka Express, en route from Bengaluru to Delhi, leading to the fatalities.
Identification and Casualties: According to Special Inspector General of Police Dattatraya Karale, of the 13 deceased, eight have been identified so far, including four individuals from Nepal. Identification efforts are ongoing, with authorities utilizing Aadhaar cards and other means to confirm the victims' identities amidst this heart-wrenching situation.
Injuries and Medical Response: Of the 15 injured, 10 are currently receiving treatment, with nine at the Pachora civil hospital and one at a medical facility in Jalgaon city. Fortunately, those with minor injuries have been discharged, while medical teams continue to provide critical care to those in need.
Response and Investigation: Following the incident, senior officials from Central Railway, including the General Manager, promptly visited the site to assess the situation. They also visited hospitals where the injured were admitted, ensuring necessary support and coordination.
Official Statements and Assistance: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, speaking from Davos, Switzerland, expressed condolences and clarified that the panic was sparked by mistaken reports of smoke, not an actual fire within the train. He announced financial aid of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased, offering some relief in this time of immense grief.
The Railway Board has also announced compensation, with Rs 1.5 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 50,000 for grievous injuries, and Rs 5,000 for minor injuries, reflecting the gravity of the situation and the immediate support being extended to the affected families.
