PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates Z-Morh Tunnel in Ganderbal, Jammu and Kashmir

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh Tunnel in Ganderbal, Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant milestone in the region's connectivity and development. The event was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. This ambitious project is a crucial step towards enhancing regional connectivity and fostering tourism in the picturesque Sonamarg area.

A Game-Changer for Connectivity and Tourism

The Z-Morh Tunnel is a 6.5-kilometer-long marvel of engineering. Its completion ensures that the Srinagar-Sonamarg route remains open throughout the year, boosting winter tourism in the region. Constructed at an altitude of 8,650 feet above sea level, the tunnel connects Srinagar with Sonamarg and provides all-weather connectivity to the Ladakh region.

The tunnel, built at a cost exceeding ₹2,700 crore, is part of a broader 12-kilometer-long project. It comprises the main 6.4-kilometer-long Sonamarg tunnel, an escape tunnel, and approach roads. The Z-Morh Tunnel is equipped with an Intelligent Traffic Management System, enhancing traffic regulation and safety. A dedicated escape tunnel ensures smooth traffic flow during emergencies.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

During the construction phase, debris from excavation was repurposed for roadside amenities and local development, demonstrating a sustainable approach to infrastructure building. This project is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic growth, promoting the Sonamarg area as a year-round tourist destination.

Boost to Security and Strategic Connectivity

The Z-Morh Tunnel strengthens strategic connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh, ensuring safe and uninterrupted travel even during harsh winters. This is crucial for both civilian convenience and the movement of defense personnel and equipment.

Heightened Security Measures

Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, security in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Poonch district, was significantly tightened. Special checkpoints were set up on key routes, and vehicles were thoroughly inspected to ensure safety during the high-profile event.

A Vision for a Connected Future

The Z-Morh Tunnel is part of Prime Minister Modi's vision of modernizing infrastructure and enhancing connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir. This project not only addresses the region's logistical challenges but also paves the way for greater integration with the rest of the country.

As the tunnel opens its gates, it ushers in a new era of development, tourism, and strategic significance for the region, reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening its northernmost territories.
