The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that it is not considering any proposal for a deepwater energy pipeline connecting India with countries in the Gulf region, countering recent media reports that suggested active government interest in such a project.
In an official statement, the ministry said it had taken note of a series of media reports claiming that the government was pursuing a deep-sea energy corridor, often referred to as the “Middle East-India Deepwater Pipeline.” The reports suggested that the proposed pipeline would connect Gujarat with Oman and potentially other Gulf nations to facilitate the transportation of energy resources.
However, the ministry categorically denied these claims, stating that no such proposal is currently under consideration. It emphasized that there are no active discussions, negotiations, or consultations regarding the project within the ministry.
“The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has noticed a series of media reports suggesting that the Government of India is actively pursuing a deep-sea energy pipeline connecting Gujarat to Oman and other Gulf countries. No such proposal is currently under consideration by the Ministry,” the statement said.
The ministry further clarified that it is not engaged in any talks with Oman or any other Gulf nation concerning the development of a subsea energy pipeline. It stressed that there are no discussions on the matter at any level within the ministry.
The clarification comes amid growing speculation over India's efforts to strengthen its energy security and diversify energy transportation routes. Reports about the alleged pipeline project had generated considerable interest due to its potential strategic and economic significance, particularly in enhancing connectivity with major energy-producing nations in the Middle East.
India remains one of the world's largest importers of crude oil and natural gas, with Gulf countries accounting for a significant share of its energy imports. While the government continues to explore various avenues for ensuring stable and secure energy supplies, the ministry's statement makes it clear that the reported deepwater pipeline proposal is not among the projects currently being pursued.
The ministry's clarification is expected to put to rest speculation surrounding the purported Middle East-India Deepwater Pipeline and reaffirm that no formal initiative of this nature is presently on the government's agenda.
