India's southwest monsoon has gathered significant momentum, bringing widespread rainfall and triggering disruptions across several parts of the country. From the national capital to the western coast and the Himalayan states, relentless showers have led to waterlogging, traffic congestion, landslides and loss of lives, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue fresh weather alerts for several regions.
The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi, urging residents to remain cautious as the wet spell is expected to continue over the coming days. Authorities in several states have stepped up monitoring efforts as rivers swell, roads remain inundated and emergency teams stay on alert.
Heavy rain lashed several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), providing relief from humid weather but creating fresh challenges for commuters. Waterlogging was reported from several low-lying areas, slowing vehicular movement during peak hours and causing traffic snarls across key roads.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Wednesday, forecasting a generally cloudy sky with intermittent light rain, isolated spells of moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph, which may occasionally reach up to 50 kmph. Civic agencies have been asked to remain prepared for localised flooding and possible disruptions.
Mumbai also remained under the grip of intense monsoon showers, with continuous rainfall affecting normal life across the city and its suburbs. Local train services, the lifeline of Mumbai, experienced delays at several locations due to water accumulation on tracks and reduced visibility.
Commuters faced long travel times as roads witnessed waterlogging and slow-moving traffic. Municipal authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall while emergency teams continue to monitor vulnerable areas.
The IMD has issued orange alerts for Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and the possibility of weather-related disruptions. Similar conditions are expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh and other northern states where persistent rainfall has increased the risk of flash floods and landslides.
Mountain regions remain particularly vulnerable as saturated soil raises the likelihood of slope failures, while rivers and streams continue to swell following continuous precipitation.
The ongoing spell of heavy rain has turned deadly in several states.
In Kerala's Wayanad district, a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall claimed the lives of three people and left several others injured. Rescue teams were deployed to the affected area as authorities assessed the extent of the damage and searched for anyone who might still be trapped.
Gujarat has also witnessed severe impacts from heavy rainfall. In Surat, five people lost their lives in rain-related incidents after the city and surrounding areas received extremely heavy showers over the past two days. Flooded roads and overflowing drains disrupted normal life in many localities.
Maharashtra's Palghar district has emerged as one of the worst-affected regions, where at least ten people have died in separate rain-related incidents over the past few days. Continuous downpours have damaged infrastructure, inundated villages and increased concerns over landslides and flooding in vulnerable areas.
Disaster management agencies and state administrations are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation. Emergency response teams have been deployed in vulnerable districts, while local authorities have advised residents living in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas to remain alert and follow official advisories.
The IMD has warned that heavy rainfall is likely to persist over several regions in the coming days. Citizens have been urged to avoid waterlogged roads, refrain from unnecessary travel during thunderstorms and keep track of weather updates issued by local authorities.
As the monsoon strengthens across the country, the focus remains on ensuring public safety while minimising disruptions caused by one of the season's most active rainfall spells so far.
