IMD Issues Red Alert for Mumbai and Maharashtra Amid Heavy Rainfall Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised concerns over anticipated severe weather conditions in Mumbai and various parts of Maharashtra, issuing a red alert as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to intensify over the weekend. The alert, announced on Saturday, underscores the looming threat posed by oligo cyclonic conditions and weakening southwest monsoon winds affecting the region.

Current Weather Scenario

Earlier this week, Mumbai witnessed substantial rainfall, with certain areas experiencing notable downpours. On Friday, isolated showers were reported across the metropolitan area, with Santa Cruz recording 14 mm of rainfall, while Colaba remained dry. These showers, though moderate, contributed to a humid and oppressive atmosphere in the city.

According to IMD Scientist Sushma Nair, "The warning issued for the next 24 hours remains a Yellow Alert, while a Red Alert has been issued for an intense spell of rainfall expected to last 2–3 hours. This particular spell is now subsiding, which is why it was categorized as a nowcast warning."

Forecast and Monsoon Update

Meteorologists anticipate light to moderate rainfall continuing through the weekend, with an increase in thunderstorm activity. The ongoing monsoon has delivered moderate rainfall to Mumbai, with Colaba recording 30 mm and Santa Cruz registering 47.1 mm over the past six days. Despite temperatures remaining slightly below average—around 32.2°C in Colaba and 31.7°C in Santa Cruz—high humidity levels have contributed to warmer-than-usual conditions, especially in the evenings.

Impact on Maharashtra

The inclement weather extends beyond Mumbai, affecting regions such as Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, and Nagpur. These areas are also expected to experience isolated thunderstorms and cloudy skies. The weather pattern spans Madhya Maharashtra to Coastal Andhra Pradesh, parts of Karnataka, and Telangana, where monsoon-related rainfall continues to disrupt daily life.

Agricultural and Public Response

Despite challenges posed by the monsoon, some farmers have reported successful outcomes, with organic Iranian dates yielding profitable returns. However, local authorities caution against potential flooding and disruptions caused by thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

IMD Advisory

IMD officials have advised residents to stay vigilant, monitor weather updates, and take necessary precautions as thunderstorm activity may fluctuate. While there is a possibility of reduced thunderstorm intensity under changing conditions, rainfall is expected to persist throughout the weekend.

As Maharashtra braces for further weather fluctuations, authorities and residents alike remain on alert to mitigate potential risks and ensure public safety amid these challenging weather conditions.
