In a significant political move, the Bhupendra Patel-led Gujarat government unveiled a new 26-member cabinet on Friday, marking a comprehensive overhaul just a day after the entire previous council of ministers resigned. The reshuffle, seen as a "strategic reset" by the ruling BJP, is aimed at revitalizing the state administration ahead of crucial local body polls and the 2027 assembly election.
The most prominent name in the new lineup is Rivaba Jadeja, the wife of Indian cricket star Ravindra Jadeja, who is set to make her political debut as a minister. Her inclusion is widely interpreted as an attempt by the BJP to leverage her public profile and connect with a wider electorate.
The development was set in motion on Thursday when all ministers, except Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, submitted their resignations. A senior BJP leader described the move as a bid to give the CM and the party's central leadership a "free hand" to reconstitute the team. Reports indicate that the ministers were asked to vacate their offices shortly after tendering their resignations.
A Blend of Experience and New Faces
The new cabinet list showcases a blend of seasoned politicians and fresh entrants. Alongside Rivaba Jadeja, other new faces include Swaroopji Thakor, Pravenkumar Mali, and Darshana Waghela.
The BJP has also brought back former Congress leader Kunvarji Bavaliya, who had joined the party in 2018, and has now been rewarded with a cabinet berth. In a notable homecoming, Arjun Modhwadia, a former president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee who recently switched to the BJP, has also been inducted. The inclusion of such prominent ex-Congress leaders is seen as a strategy to consolidate support and weaken the opposition's base.
Key figures from the previous cabinet, such as Rushikesh Patel, Harsh Sanghvi, Kanubhai Desai, and Parshottam Solanki, have retained their positions, ensuring continuity in core administrative areas.
Eyes on the Future
This is the first major cabinet reshuffle since Bhupendra Patel took over as Chief Minister in 2021, succeeding Vijay Rupani. He subsequently led the BJP to a commanding victory in the 2022 state assembly polls.
The timing of this reset is critical. With urban and local body elections on the horizon and the larger battle for the 2027 state assembly beginning to take shape, the BJP is seeking to present a refreshed and dynamic team. The move is designed to infuse new energy, address any anti-incumbency sentiments, and project a renewed focus on governance and development.
Chief Minister Patel met Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat on Thursday evening to submit the list of new ministers. The swearing-in ceremony for the new cabinet is scheduled for Friday around noon, setting the stage for a new chapter in the BJP's governance of Gujarat.
