In a move that ends weeks of intense speculation and internal wrangling, the opposition 'Mahagathbandhan' (Grand Alliance) in Bihar on Thursday officially named Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming state assembly elections.
The announcement, made at a crucial press conference in Patna, also revealed that Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani will be the alliance's deputy chief ministerial face. The decision is seen as a strategic move to present a united and clear leadership front against the incumbent National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
The formal declaration came from senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot, who was dispatched to Patna as a troubleshooter to iron out fissures within the alliance. "After talks with all senior leaders, the alliance has decided that Tejashwi Yadav will be the CM face of Mahagathbandhan in the upcoming Bihar polls. He has a long future ahead," Gehlot stated, lending weight to the announcement.
The naming of Tejashwi Yadav, 31, who has previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar for two terms in the Nitish Kumar-led government, sets the stage for a direct contest. It positions the young RJD leader as the prime challenger to Kumar's long tenure, centering the electoral battle on the issue of leadership and generational change.
The announcement follows a period of uncertainty and friction within the Mahagathbandhan over seat-sharing and candidate declarations. The tensions had escalated to the point of creating "friendly fights" on a few seats between the Congress and the RJD, threatening to undermine the alliance's cohesion just weeks before the polls.
The resolution of these issues and the subsequent declaration of a chief ministerial face is a significant step towards consolidating the opposition's position. By naming Mukesh Sahani, whose party has influence among the Mallah (fishermen) community, as the deputy CM candidate, the alliance has also made a calculated effort to bolster its appeal among Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs), a key voting bloc in the state.
The Bihar assembly elections are scheduled to be held in two phases on November 6 and 11. The counting of votes will take place on November 14, a day that will determine whether the Mahagathbandhan's bet on Tejashwi Yadav's leadership will pave the way for a new government in Patna.
