Tamil Nadu Political Crisis LIVE: TVK gathers MLAs amid speculation over AIADMK-DMK alliance talks

A dramatic political deadlock has gripped Tamil Nadu after no party or alliance managed to secure a clear majority in the recently concluded Assembly elections, leaving the state without a government even four days after the results were declared. The prolonged uncertainty has triggered intense political negotiations, constitutional debates, and speculation over possible alliances among rival parties.

Actor-turned-politician Vijay emerged as the biggest winner of the election as his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, making it the single largest party in the state. However, the party remains short of the majority mark of 118 seats required to form the government.

The Indian National Congress, which won five seats, has extended support to TVK, but the numbers still fall short. Despite this, Vijay has intensified efforts to stake claim to power and has met Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar twice in the last 24 hours, urging the Governor to invite TVK to form the government.

However, the Governor has not yet issued a formal invitation, leading to growing political suspense and raising questions about constitutional procedure in a hung Assembly scenario.

The delay has sparked a heated debate among constitutional experts and political observers. One section argues that the Governor has discretionary powers to assess whether a party can demonstrate majority support before inviting it to form the government. Others contend that constitutional conventions require the Governor to first invite the single largest party — in this case, TVK — to stake claim and prove its majority on the Assembly floor.

As uncertainty continues, political speculation has intensified over the possibility of an unprecedented post-poll understanding between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), two bitter rivals that have dominated Tamil Nadu politics for decades.

The mere possibility of such an alliance has triggered sharp reactions from TVK. Sources within the party indicated that Vijay has warned that all 107 TVK MLAs could resign if the DMK and AIADMK join hands to form the government, a move that could plunge the state into an even deeper constitutional and political crisis.

Meanwhile, senior AIADMK leader and MP M Thambidurai said there remains strong public support for the AIADMK’s return to power.

“The public sentiment is there that AIADMK has to come back to power. That may happen in due course of time with the grace of God,” he remarked, adding further intrigue to the ongoing political developments.

The current impasse marks one of the most uncertain phases in Tamil Nadu’s political history, with the emergence of TVK disrupting the traditional dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. As backchannel talks continue and the Governor weighs his next move, the state remains on edge awaiting clarity on who will ultimately form the next government.
