Supreme Court Orders Independent SIT Probe into Allegations of Adulterated Ghee in Tirumala Tirupati Temple Prasadam

The Supreme Court has taken a decisive step in response to allegations regarding the use of adulterated ghee in the preparation of Prasadam laddus at the revered Tirumala Tirupati Temple. In a significant development, the apex court has ordered the formation of an independent Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate the matter.

Composition of the Independent SIT

The SIT, mandated by the Supreme Court, will comprise:

  • Two officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
  • Two officers from the Andhra Pradesh Police
  • A senior officer from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)

The entire investigation will be under the direct supervision of the Director of the CBI, ensuring rigorous scrutiny of the allegations.

Court Proceedings and Background

During the proceedings, the Supreme Court clarified that its decision to form the SIT does not reflect any judgment on the merit of the allegations or counter-allegations presented thus far. Emphasizing the sensitivity of the issue to millions of devotees of the Tirumala temple deity, the Court underscored that its intervention aims to uphold the sanctity and trust associated with religious practices.

Various petitions were heard by the Court, including those filed by prominent figures such as senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, former Chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam YV Subba Reddy, historian Vikram Sampath, and spiritual discourse speaker Dushyanth Sridhar. Their collective appeal sought judicial intervention to address concerns raised over the quality and authenticity of the sacred Prasadam laddus.

Political Controversy and Public Statements

The case gained significant public and political attention following allegations made by former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu. Mr. Naidu publicly accused the previous government led by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy of using animal fat in the preparation of Tirupati laddus. These allegations sparked a contentious political debate, prompting the Supreme Court to caution against the issue being exploited for political gain.

Judicial Caution and Final Remarks

In its final remarks, the Supreme Court urged all parties involved to respect the judicial process and refrain from turning the matter into a political battleground. The Court's intervention underscores its commitment to safeguarding the religious sentiments and trust of devotees, ensuring transparency and accountability in the investigation process.
