In a tragic escalation of violence, a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a joint security check post in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing 18 people, including 12 security personnel and six terrorists. The incident occurred late Tuesday night in the Mali Khel area of Bannu district, the Pakistani Army’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), reported on Wednesday.
The terrorists launched their assault by attempting to breach the joint check post, manned by troops from the security forces and the Frontier Constabulary. However, the attempt was effectively thwarted by alert personnel, ISPR stated. The suicide blast caused significant damage, including the collapse of a portion of the perimeter wall and nearby infrastructure. Among the casualties were 10 soldiers and two Frontier Constabulary personnel. Several others sustained injuries and were immediately transported to a local hospital.
In the ensuing firefight, six terrorists were neutralized, ISPR confirmed. The attack prompted security forces to impose a curfew in the area while conducting a sanitization operation to ensure no further threats remain.
This incident underscores the escalating violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province that has frequently been targeted by terrorist groups. Alongside Balochistan, it has become the epicenter of terrorism-related incidents in Pakistan.
Recent reports from the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) reveal a 90% surge in violence during the third quarter of this year. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has borne the brunt of this increase, with attacks targeting both civilians and security forces.
The attack comes in the wake of a high-level meeting of Pakistan's Federal Apex Committee on Tuesday. The civil and military leadership, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approved a "comprehensive military operation" aimed at countering terrorist organisations, particularly in Balochistan. Army Chief Gen. Syed Asim Munir and other senior officials were present at the meeting, which stressed the urgent need to tackle the rising wave of militancy.
This operation, according to officials, is designed to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorist groups and restore stability in regions that have witnessed an uptick in violence.
Tuesday’s attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa serves as a grim reminder of the challenges Pakistan faces in curbing terrorism. As the country grapples with increasing militancy, security forces and law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to eliminate the menace of terrorism.
