BJP Announces First List of 71 Candidates for Bihar Polls, Nand Kishore Yadav Dropped

In a significant move that sets the stage for the high-stakes Bihar Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday unveiled its first list of 71 candidates. The announcement comes amid a palpable deadlock in seat-sharing talks within the state's ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), signaling the BJP's intent to go on the front foot.

The list, approved by the party's Central Election Committee, features several big names, most notably both Deputy Chief Ministers of Bihar. Samrat Chaudhary, a prominent OBC leader, will contest from the Tarapur constituency, while Vijay Sinha, who hails from the upper caste Bhumihar community, will run from Lakhisarai. This underscores the party's strategy to balance caste equations and consolidate its core voter base.

However, the list also contained a major surprise, leading to notable exclusions. Bihar Assembly Speaker and senior BJP leader Nand Kishore Yadav, a seven-time MLA from the Patna Sahib constituency, has been dropped from the list. While the official reason for his omission was not immediately provided, it has sent ripples through political circles, indicating a possible generational shift or strategic recalibration by the party leadership.

The selection of candidates reveals a carefully crafted strategy. The tickets given to both Deputy CMs, who represent different caste groups, are aimed at strengthening the party's social coalition. Samrat Chaudhary's candidacy from Tarapur is aimed at solidifying the Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) vote, while Vijay Sinha's presence in Lakhisarai is expected to rally the upper caste voters.

The omission of a veteran like Nand Kishore Yadav suggests the party is willing to make tough calls to inject new energy or respond to local anti-incumbency, a move that is not without its risks given his long-standing influence in his constituency.
