Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday underscored the enduring trust that citizens place in the judiciary, stating that safeguarding and enhancing this confidence is a shared responsibility of all stakeholders. He was speaking at a seminar titled “The Bench Beyond Retirement” held at the Constitution Club in Jaipur.
Highlighting the continued relevance of former judges, the Chief Justice said their role remains crucial even after retirement. He noted that retired members of the judiciary can contribute significantly by promoting legal awareness among citizens and by actively participating in conciliation and mediation processes, thereby strengthening the justice delivery system.
CJI Surya Kant also urged judicial institutions and affiliated bodies, including the National Legal Services Authority and various State Legal Services Authorities, to adopt a more proactive and aware approach in their functioning to ensure greater access to justice.
Addressing the gathering, Bhajan Lal Sharma, Chief Minister of Rajasthan, praised the judiciary for delivering landmark judgments that have positively impacted millions of lives. He encouraged citizens to explore alternative dispute resolution mechanisms such as mediation centres and Lok Adalats before opting for formal litigation, stressing that such approaches can save both time and resources.
On the occasion, the Rajasthan High Court launched the Uniform Registration Number System, aimed at streamlining judicial processes. A compilation of articles authored by former judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts was also released during the event.
The seminar was attended by Acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, members of the Association of Retired Judges, and several other judges and judicial officers, reflecting a collective commitment to strengthening the judiciary and its outreach.
