Skyroot’s Vikram-1 Reaches Orbit, Marks Historic Milestone for India’s Private Space Sector

India's private space industry scripted history on Saturday as Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 successfully reached orbit after completing its final burn, becoming the country's first privately developed orbital-class rocket to achieve the feat. The landmark mission, named "Mission Aagaman," represents a major breakthrough for India's rapidly expanding commercial space ecosystem and highlights the growing role of private enterprises in the nation's space ambitions.

The successful launch marks Skyroot Aerospace's second space mission. The Hyderabad-based startup had earlier created history on November 18, 2022, by launching Vikram-S, India's first privately built rocket. While Vikram-S was a suborbital demonstrator, Vikram-1 has now demonstrated the capability to place payloads into orbit, taking the company a significant step closer to becoming a commercial launch service provider.

The Vikram-1 launch vehicle is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, widely regarded as the father of India's space programme. Designed as a four-stage rocket, Vikram-1 is capable of carrying payloads weighing up to 350 kilograms into low Earth orbit. Under Mission Aagaman, the rocket targeted an orbital altitude of approximately 450 kilometres with an inclination of 60 degrees, showcasing its ability to serve the growing global demand for launching small satellites.

The mission is expected to strengthen India's position in the increasingly competitive small satellite launch market. With the rapid expansion of satellite constellations such as Starlink and OneWeb, demand for quick, reliable, and cost-effective launch services has surged worldwide. Vikram-1 has been developed to provide rapid and on-demand launch capabilities, positioning Skyroot to tap into this growing commercial opportunity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Skyroot Aerospace team following the successful mission and described the achievement as a historic moment for India's space journey.

Calling it "a historic new frontier for India's space journey," the Prime Minister praised the innovation, determination and entrepreneurial spirit of the country's youth. He said the mission reflected the success of India's space-sector reforms, which have opened new opportunities for innovation and enterprise. Modi also encouraged young Indians to follow the mission and celebrate the country's growing achievements in space technology.

Ahead of the launch, Skyroot had invited people across the country to witness the historic event through a live webcast on its official YouTube channel, generating significant public interest in what has become one of India's most important privately-led space missions.

Mission Aagaman also underscores the transformation of India's space sector following policy reforms that allowed greater participation by private companies. For decades, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) led the country's space activities almost exclusively. Today, however, a new generation of startups is building launch vehicles, satellites and space technologies alongside the national space agency.

Skyroot is not alone in this emerging ecosystem. ISRO has already developed the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) for dedicated small satellite missions, while startup Agnikul Cosmos is working on its own family of launch vehicles. Together, these efforts are expected to significantly enhance India's capability to launch small satellites for domestic and international customers.

Industry experts believe the success of Vikram-1 will further boost investor confidence in India's private space sector, encourage innovation, and accelerate the country's ambitions of becoming a leading global hub for affordable space launches.

Beyond its technological success, Mission Aagaman symbolizes a new chapter in India's space story—one driven not only by government agencies but also by entrepreneurs, scientists, investors and innovators working together. As India's commercial space ecosystem continues to mature, the successful orbital launch of Vikram-1 is likely to be remembered as a defining milestone that paved the way for a vibrant and globally competitive private space industry.
