In a tense public appearance marking her return to the public eye, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s event in Gandhi Nagar was interrupted on Friday by two men who were subsequently arrested for raising slogans and creating a disturbance. The incident occurred just two days after the Chief Minister was attacked at her residence during a 'Jan Sunwai' (public hearing) programme.
The event, intended to engage with constituents, was CM Gupta’s first since the shocking attack, which had already prompted a major review of her security protocol. According to reports, the disruption began when one of the individuals got into an argument with local traders in the area. The altercation quickly escalated, leading the man to begin shouting slogans directly against the Chief Minister.
The situation was brought under control swiftly, with security personnel on site immediately apprehending the two men before the protest could intensify. The quick response highlighted the heightened state of alert surrounding the Chief Minister following the recent breach of security.
Enhanced Security Deployment
In direct response to the residence attack, the Delhi Chief Minister’s security was formally enhanced on Thursday. The new security detail will now include specialized commandos from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who will be responsible for guarding the inner perimeter of the CM’s security cordon.
The Delhi Police will continue its role, managing the outer security perimeter. This layered, multi-force security arrangement signifies a significant upgrade and reflects the serious concerns for the Chief Minister’s safety.
While the Gandhi Nagar incident ended without physical harm, it underscores the volatile political climate and the ongoing security challenges facing the Chief Minister. Investigations into both the initial attack and today's sloganeering incident are ongoing.
