In a significant political development, senior leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) — Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, and Ashok Mittal — on Friday formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of BJP leader Nitin Nabin. The move marks a major blow to AAP, as a substantial chunk of its Rajya Sabha representation has now shifted allegiance.
Addressing a joint press conference, Sandeep Pathak confirmed his decision to leave AAP and join the BJP, citing political differences and dissatisfaction within the party. Raghav Chadha went further, announcing that nearly two-thirds of AAP’s Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament have broken away and decided to merge with the BJP as a separate faction.
Chadha claimed that the exodus is not limited to the three leaders alone. He stated that several other prominent Rajya Sabha MPs, including Swati Maliwal and Harbhajan Singh, have also quit AAP. According to the leaders, as many as seven out of the party’s 10 Rajya Sabha MPs have resigned, signaling a deep internal crisis within the party.
The development comes as a major political setback for AAP, which has been striving to expand its footprint beyond Delhi and Punjab. The departure of key parliamentary figures not only weakens its legislative strength in the Upper House but also raises questions about internal cohesion and leadership.
