Prime Ministers Modi Visits Semiconductor Industry in Singapore

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by his Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong, embarked on a significant visit to AEM Holdings Ltd, a prominent player in Singapore's semiconductor and electronics sector. This visit, part of Prime Minister Modi's two-day trip to Singapore at Wong's invitation, aimed to explore avenues for collaboration in the critical semiconductor industry.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders were briefed on AEM Holdings Ltd's pivotal role in the global semiconductor value chain, including its operations and future plans for India. The visit underscored efforts to strengthen ties in advanced manufacturing, particularly in semiconductors, a sector where Singapore holds substantial expertise.

"Boosting ties in the area of Advanced manufacturing. PM @narendramodi and PM @LawrenceWongST visited AEM Holdings Ltd. today, a leading Singaporean company in the semiconductors and electronics sector," tweeted Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

During their visit, representatives from the Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association outlined the development of Singapore's semiconductor ecosystem and highlighted potential collaboration opportunities with India. This aligns with recent agreements, including the memorandum of understanding on the India-Singapore Semiconductor Ecosystem Partnership.

"Given our efforts to develop the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India and Singapore’s strengths in this sector, both sides have decided to expand bilateral cooperation," stated the press release.

Prime Ministers Modi and Wong also engaged with Indian interns from Odisha’s World Skill Center currently undergoing training in Singapore, as well as Singaporean interns who had previously visited India under the CII-Enterprise Singapore India Ready Talent Programme. They also interacted with Indian engineers working at AEM, emphasizing the cross-border talent exchange facilitated by such programs.

The visit to AEM Holdings Ltd reflects the commitment of both nations to fostering cooperation in advanced manufacturing, particularly in semiconductors. Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Wong for his participation, reinforcing the strategic importance of such collaborations in enhancing bilateral relations.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to Singaporean semiconductor companies to participate in the upcoming SEMICON INDIA exhibition scheduled for September 11-13, 2024, in Greater Noida. This gesture aims to further strengthen ties and promote technological exchange between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi's visit to Singapore follows his inaugural bilateral visit to Brunei, marking a significant diplomatic outreach to Southeast Asia. His arrival in Singapore was warmly received by the Indian community, underscoring the strong people-to-people ties between India and Singapore.

This visit not only highlights the growing partnership between India and Singapore in advanced manufacturing but also sets the stage for deeper collaboration in high-tech industries, crucial for both countries' economic development and technological advancement.
