President Droupadi Murmu on Friday highlighted the vast potential for expanding India-Romania economic ties, urging businesses from both countries to forge long-term partnerships in key sectors such as energy, technology, infrastructure, healthcare and manufacturing. Addressing the India–Romania Business Forum in Bucharest, the President said Romania's strategic location, industrial capabilities and integration with the European Union make it a natural partner for India and a gateway to the wider European market.
The event was attended by Romanian President Nicușor Dan, members of the Romanian government, business leaders from both countries and representatives of industry associations. President Murmu said the participation of a large Indian business delegation reflected the growing confidence of Indian industries in Romania's investment potential and their commitment to building enduring commercial relationships.
Emphasising the importance of trade and investment, the President said economic cooperation remains the cornerstone of the contemporary India-Romania partnership. She also underlined the significance of the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), describing it as one of the world's most important economic partnerships. With a combined market of nearly two billion people and an economic size of around 25 trillion US dollars, she said the agreement has the potential to deepen trade integration, boost investment flows and create resilient and diversified supply chains.
President Murmu stressed that the early and effective implementation of the India-EU FTA would provide businesses with a predictable and transparent environment while opening fresh opportunities for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), startups and innovators on both sides.
Highlighting India's economic progress, the President said the country remains one of the world's fastest-growing major economies. She noted that the vision of "Viksit Bharat 2047" aims to transform India into a developed nation by the centenary of its Independence, creating significant opportunities for international investment, technology partnerships and business collaboration.
She said the Government of India has undertaken several reforms to create a transparent, predictable and investor-friendly business environment through simplified taxation policies and production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes, making India an attractive destination for global investors.
President Murmu also identified several sectors where India and Romania can deepen cooperation. She pointed to opportunities in energy security and the green transition, noting that Romania's strengths in the chemical and fertiliser industries could complement India's growing demand. She further highlighted the scope for collaboration in digital technologies, where India's globally recognised Digital Public Infrastructure, thriving startup ecosystem and IT expertise can work alongside Romania's strengths in software engineering, cybersecurity, research and advanced technologies.
The President also called for stronger cooperation in transportation and logistics, including ports, railways, highways, logistics parks and multimodal transport networks. She added that pharmaceuticals, healthcare, agriculture and food processing are other promising areas where businesses from the two countries can build mutually beneficial partnerships.
Expressing optimism about the future of bilateral economic ties, President Murmu said Indian and Romanian businesses have the opportunity to create resilient supply chains, generate employment, promote innovation and contribute to sustainable prosperity. She invited Romanian companies to participate actively in India's growth story and reaffirmed India's commitment to strengthening economic engagement with Romania and the wider European region.
