PM Modi to Putin: “India Supports Peace; Ukraine Conflict Must Be Resolved Through Dialogue”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reaffirmed India’s clear and consistent position on the Ukraine conflict during a high-level bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Emphasising that “the path of peace” alone ensures the welfare of nations, PM Modi conveyed that India firmly supports dialogue and diplomacy as the only sustainable way to end the war that has persisted since February 2022.

India’s Stand: “Not Neutral, But for Peace”

In his opening remarks, the prime minister stated that India has maintained continuous communication with Russia since the beginning of the crisis. He praised the transparency and trust shared between the two nations, saying President Putin has “kept us informed… as a true friend.”

Reiterating India’s position, PM Modi asserted:

“India is not neutral. India has a clear position, and that position is for peace. We support every effort toward peace.”

He noted that in recent interactions with global leaders, India has consistently advocated peace as the guiding principle for resolving the conflict. PM Modi expressed confidence that both Russia and Ukraine would eventually find a solution through diplomatic engagement.

‘Together We Can Lead the World Towards Peace’

Highlighting India–Russia cooperation across decades, PM Modi reflected on the strength of mutual trust between the two countries. He said that this trust can play a significant role in shaping a more peaceful global order.

“The welfare of nations lies in the path of peace… India and Russia together can lead the world towards that path.”

Putin, on his part, stated that Russia, too, remains committed to seeking a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict, acknowledging the importance of India’s balanced and principled approach.

Putin Receives Ceremonial Welcome in Delhi

Earlier in the day, President Vladimir Putin was given a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Modi, and other dignitaries were present to honour the visiting leader.

The Russian president later visited Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. In the visitors’ book, Putin wrote a heartfelt tribute:

“One of the founders of modern India, the great philosopher and humanitarian Mahatma Gandhi contributed immensely to world peace. His ideas about freedom, goodness and humanity have not lost their relevance nowadays, either.”

A Visit Focused on Dialogue and Diplomacy

Putin’s visit comes at a time of heightened global geopolitical tension. The reaffirmation of India’s stance underscores New Delhi’s growing role as a voice of balance and responsible diplomacy on the global stage. As the war in Ukraine continues with no immediate end in sight, India’s strong reiteration of its stand—supporting peace, not neutrality—adds significant weight to efforts aimed at encouraging dialogue between the warring sides.

The meeting between Modi and Putin signals not only the depth of India-Russia relations but also India’s commitment to promoting global stability through peaceful means.
