Islamabad witnessed a dramatic midnight crackdown on Tuesday as Pakistani security forces launched a decisive operation to clear thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from the high-security Red Zone. Tensions had been escalating since Sunday, when PTI supporters began a “long march” from Pakistan’s northwest under the leadership of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. This march culminated in Islamabad on Tuesday, marking the start of what protesters described as a 'do-or-die' effort to secure Imran Khan’s release.
Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, played a visible role in the demonstrations, rallying supporters before reportedly fleeing when security forces moved in. PTI supporters, some armed and vowing to resist, declared their resolve to stay until their demands were met. “If they fire bullets again, we will respond with bullets,” warned Shahzor Ali, a PTI activist.
Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year, faces more than 150 criminal charges. His party maintains that these charges are politically motivated, aimed at sidelining Khan from Pakistan’s political landscape.
