Pakistani Security Forces Disperse Pro-Imran Khan Protesters in Midnight Operation

Islamabad witnessed a dramatic midnight crackdown on Tuesday as Pakistani security forces launched a decisive operation to clear thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from the high-security Red Zone. The protesters, affiliated with Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, had breached barricades and clashed with authorities in their demand for his release from prison. The violent protests resulted in the deaths of four security personnel and two PTI supporters, according to Dawn.

Red Zone Under Siege

The Red Zone, home to key government buildings and embassies, turned into a battleground as PTI protesters clashed with authorities using tear gas and gunfire. Mass arrests followed as security forces struggled to regain control of the area. The Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, confirmed that the Red Zone was eventually cleared, though it remains under tight military surveillance. This includes D-Chowk, where Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is currently staying during an official visit.

The 'Do-or-Die' Protest

Tensions had been escalating since Sunday, when PTI supporters began a “long march” from Pakistan’s northwest under the leadership of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. This march culminated in Islamabad on Tuesday, marking the start of what protesters described as a 'do-or-die' effort to secure Imran Khan’s release.

Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, played a visible role in the demonstrations, rallying supporters before reportedly fleeing when security forces moved in. PTI supporters, some armed and vowing to resist, declared their resolve to stay until their demands were met. “If they fire bullets again, we will respond with bullets,” warned Shahzor Ali, a PTI activist.

The Political Backdrop

Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year, faces more than 150 criminal charges. His party maintains that these charges are politically motivated, aimed at sidelining Khan from Pakistan’s political landscape. The former Prime Minister’s arrest has galvanized his supporters, who view him as a victim of political vendetta.

Government’s Firm Response

The Interior Ministry has defended the crackdown as necessary to restore order in Islamabad. Authorities are now maintaining a heavy security presence across the city to prevent further escalations. However, the situation remains volatile, with PTI supporters vowing to continue their resistance.

A Nation on Edge

The violent turn of events underscores Pakistan’s deep political divisions and the growing public discontent with the current administration. The PTI protests have become a flashpoint in the country’s fraught political climate, raising concerns about the potential for further unrest.

As Islamabad braces for potential aftershocks from the midnight operation, the standoff between PTI supporters and the government highlights the enduring influence of Imran Khan on Pakistan’s political narrative. The question of his release has now become a litmus test for the country’s democratic resilience and stability.
