One Dead, Four Injured as Metro Pillar Segment Collapses in Mumbai’s Mulund Area

A tragic accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Mulund area of Mumbai, where a portion of a pillar from an under-construction metro rail line collapsed, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to four others.

The incident took place around 12:15 pm on the busy arterial LBS Road, directly in front of the Johnson and Johnson factory. According to details learned by HT, the collapse sent commuters and local residents into a state of panic as debris fell onto the road below.

While initial reports indicated multiple injuries, authorities later confirmed that a piece of the under-construction structure struck a passing auto-rickshaw. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is overseeing the project, released a statement clarifying the sequence of events.

“A portion of a parapet segment fell from a height and struck a passing auto-rickshaw,” the MMRDA said.

In its official communication, the MMRDA stated that two individuals had sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. However, sources and further reporting confirmed that the toll was higher, with one person succumbing to injuries and four others, including the auto-rickshaw occupants, receiving medical treatment.

“Two individuals sustained injuries and were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital. Their condition is being monitored and all necessary medical assistance is being extended,” the MMRDA statement added, before elaborating on the response efforts. “The Metro project team is at the site and is working on relief operations and securing the site in close co-ordination with BMC and disaster management authorities.”

Emergency services quickly cordoned off the area to clear the debris and manage the traffic snarls that ensued on LBS Road, a key thoroughfare in the city. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, and the condition of the injured is currently being monitored by medical staff.

This incident raises fresh concerns regarding safety protocols at major infrastructure project sites in the city. The MMRDA has assured that a thorough review will be conducted to prevent such occurrences in the future as relief operations continue at the scene.
