‘Melody’ Moment Returns: Modi and Meloni Share Light-Hearted Exchange at G7 Summit

Amid high-level discussions on global security, trade, and geopolitical challenges at the G7 Summit in France's picturesque town of Evian-les-Bains, a lighter moment between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni captured widespread attention.

The two leaders, known for their warm rapport, reportedly shared a joke about their viral “Melody” moment during an informal interaction on the sidelines of the summit. Their exchange rekindled memories of a social media sensation that emerged during PM Modi’s visit to Italy in May this year.

The camaraderie between the leaders first grabbed international attention during a hot mic moment at a previous G7 gathering. As she greeted PM Modi, Meloni was heard jokingly saying, “We are the most famous couple on Instagram,” drawing laughter and sparking a flood of online reactions. The remark quickly went viral, further cementing the popularity of the duo among social media users.

The Story Behind ‘Melody’

The latest exchange appears to reference a memorable episode from PM Modi’s five-nation tour in May, which included visits to the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. During his stop in Italy, PM Modi presented Meloni with a packet of India’s popular Melody chocolates.

In a video later shared on Instagram, Meloni enthusiastically displayed the gift, saying, “Prime Minister Modi brought us a gift. A very, very good toffee,” before breaking into laughter. The clip quickly became an internet sensation, attracting nearly 13 million likes and generating countless memes and posts across social media platforms.

The online community coined the term “Melodi” — a playful blend of Meloni and Modi, sounding similar to the chocolate brand “Melody” — to celebrate the friendly chemistry between the two leaders.

More Than Social Media Popularity

While the “Melody” moments have delighted social media users, analysts note that the recurring interactions reflect a broader and increasingly significant partnership between India and Italy. The two countries have intensified cooperation under the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, which aims to strengthen collaboration in key sectors including trade, investment, defence, clean energy, innovation, science and technology, and cultural exchanges.

Economic ties between the two nations have also witnessed substantial growth. Bilateral trade reached approximately USD 16.77 billion in 2025, underscoring the expanding commercial relationship. Meanwhile, cumulative Italian foreign direct investment in India stood at USD 3.66 billion between April 2000 and September 2025.

A Partnership Growing Stronger

As world leaders gathered at the G7 Summit to address pressing international issues, the friendly interaction between Modi and Meloni offered a reminder that diplomacy often extends beyond formal meetings and policy discussions. Their now-famous “Melody” connection has become a symbol of the growing warmth in India-Italy relations, reflecting both personal chemistry and a strategic partnership that continues to deepen across multiple sectors.

With the “Melody” phenomenon once again making headlines, the bond between New Delhi and Rome appears set to remain a talking point both online and in diplomatic circles.
