Indian Railways Approves Rs 403 Crore for Kavach 4.0 and Modern Signalling Systems

Indian Railways Approves Rs 403 Crore for Kavach 4.0 and Modern Signalling Systems

Indian Railways has approved projects worth a combined Rs 403 crore to strengthen railway safety and modernise signalling infrastructure in the Moradabad and Samastipur divisions. The initiatives are aimed at improving train safety, upgrading signalling systems and facilitating the wider deployment of the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, Kavach.

Of the total allocation, Rs 170 crore has been sanctioned for the implementation of Kavach 4.0 on the remaining 712 Route Kilometres of Moradabad Division under Northern Railway. According to the Railways Ministry, the project will strengthen the division's railway safety infrastructure through the deployment of the latest version of the indigenous train protection system.

The implementation of Kavach 4.0 is expected to provide an additional and advanced safety layer for train operations across the identified sections. The system is designed to assist in preventing train-related accidents by providing automatic protection in situations where human intervention may not be sufficient.

The approval assumes significance as Indian Railways continues to expand the coverage of Kavach across its network. The indigenous system is being developed and deployed as part of efforts to enhance railway safety through modern technology and reduce the possibility of accidents caused by signal-related or operational errors.

In another major decision, Indian Railways has approved Rs 233 crore for the installation of Electronic Interlocking at 21 stations in the Samastipur Division of East Central Railway. The project is intended to modernise the signalling infrastructure and create the technological foundation required for the implementation of Kavach.

Electronic Interlocking is a computer-based signalling technology that replaces conventional relay-based interlocking systems. Unlike older systems, electronic interlocking enables more efficient control and monitoring of railway routes and signalling operations.

The Railways Ministry said the modern system will offer several operational advantages, including higher reliability, faster fault diagnosis, easier maintenance and greater operational flexibility. The upgrade is expected to improve the efficiency and safety of train movements at the identified stations.

The two projects together reflect Indian Railways' broader strategy of combining advanced train-protection technology with modern signalling infrastructure. While Kavach provides an additional safety mechanism during train operations, Electronic Interlocking strengthens the underlying signalling framework needed for the safe and efficient movement of trains.

The Rs 170-crore Kavach 4.0 project in Moradabad Division and the Rs 233-crore Electronic Interlocking project in Samastipur Division therefore represent important investments in railway modernisation. Their implementation is expected to enhance safety standards, improve operational reliability and support the gradual transition of India's railway network towards more technology-driven train management systems.
