Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Friday said that clean energy sources met more than 50 percent of India's electricity demand for the second time, highlighting the country's rapid progress in expanding renewable energy capacity and strengthening its clean power ecosystem.
In a post on social media, Joshi said renewable energy sources contributed 50.2 percent of the country's electricity supply on July 6, marking another significant milestone in India's transition towards sustainable energy. He described the achievement as a testament to the growing strength, resilience, and reliability of India's clean energy ecosystem, reflecting the country's continued efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while ensuring reliable electricity for consumers.
The minister credited the achievement to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that India is advancing its clean energy mission with speed and determination. He said the country's focus on renewable energy is driving sustainable economic growth while supporting global efforts to combat climate change. According to Joshi, the government's policies and investments in solar, wind, hydropower, and other renewable energy sources have accelerated the country's energy transition and positioned India among the world's fastest-growing clean energy markets.
India has set ambitious renewable energy targets as part of its broader commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and increasing the share of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation. Over the past few years, the government has significantly expanded solar and wind energy capacity, promoted green hydrogen initiatives, and strengthened transmission infrastructure to integrate renewable power into the national grid.
The latest milestone underscores the increasing role of clean energy in meeting the country's growing electricity demand while enhancing energy security and reducing carbon emissions. With renewable energy contributing more than half of the nation's power supply for the second time, the government views the achievement as a strong indicator of India's steady progress towards building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy future.
