Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said that India has sufficient food stock due to the relentless efforts and hard work of the country’s farmers. Addressing the inaugural session of the National Conference on Agriculture for Kharif Campaign 2026 in New Delhi, the Minister highlighted the significant achievements made in the agriculture sector over the past year.
Mr Chouhan stated that the estimated foodgrain production in the country this year has crossed 376 million tonnes, registering a growth of 5.3 per cent compared to last year’s output. He described the achievement as a reflection of the dedication of Indian farmers and the continued support extended by the government to the agriculture sector.
The Union Minister emphasized that the government has been consistently prioritising agriculture and farmer welfare through various policy initiatives, infrastructure support and technological interventions. He noted that India has now emerged as the world’s largest producer of rice, surpassing China, which marks a major milestone for the country’s agricultural economy.
Highlighting the importance of the two-day conference, Mr Chouhan said the event would play a crucial role in preparing a comprehensive roadmap for the upcoming Kharif season and for the long-term welfare of farmers. He added that discussions during the conference would focus on several key areas including organic farming, integrated farming systems, climate-resilient agriculture and increasing farm productivity.
The conference aims to deliberate on strategies for sustainable agricultural growth, infrastructure strengthening, enhanced productivity and farmer prosperity ahead of the forthcoming Kharif season. It has brought together senior officials from the Central Government, State Governments, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), agricultural institutions and other stakeholders for coordinated planning and action.
The inaugural ceremony was also attended by Ministers of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ram Nath Thakur and Bhagirath Choudhary, along with senior government officials and representatives from the agricultural sector.
The conference is expected to help strengthen cooperation between the Centre and States while promoting innovative and sustainable farming practices to ensure higher incomes and better livelihoods for farmers across the country.
