Government Approves Additional Wheat Exports to Boost Farmers, Stabilise Markets

In a significant move aimed at supporting farmers and ensuring stability in domestic markets, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has approved the export of an additional 25 lakh metric tonnes of wheat. The decision comes after a comprehensive review of production estimates, stock availability, and prevailing price trends.

The government noted a steady rise in wheat cultivation, with acreage during the Rabi 2026 season expanding to over 334 lakh hectares, up from more than 328 lakh hectares last year. Officials attributed this increase to growing farmer confidence, driven by an assured Minimum Support Price (MSP) and robust procurement mechanisms.

As per the Second Advance Estimates released last month, wheat production for the 2025–26 crop year is projected at 1202 lakh metric tonnes, indicating a comfortable supply position. This strong output has provided the government with the flexibility to allow higher exports while maintaining adequate domestic reserves.

The latest approval builds on earlier export decisions taken this year. In January, the government permitted the export of 5 lakh metric tonnes of wheat products. This was followed in February by an additional 5 lakh metric tonnes of wheat products and 25 lakh metric tonnes of wheat. With the current decision, total permitted exports now stand at 50 lakh metric tonnes of wheat and 10 lakh metric tonnes of wheat products.

According to the Ministry, the move is expected to enhance market liquidity, facilitate efficient stock management, and prevent distress sales during the peak arrival season. It is also aimed at stabilising domestic prices while improving farmers’ incomes, without compromising the country’s food security.

The government reiterated its commitment to adopting timely and calibrated measures to strike a balance between the interests of farmers and consumers. It emphasised that such steps are essential to promote sustainable growth in the agriculture sector and ensure long-term market stability.
