Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the ambitious Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi, describing the mega infrastructure project as a transformative “lifeline” for the state. Stretching between Meerut and Prayagraj, the expressway is expected to significantly improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and boost economic activity across the region.
Addressing a public gathering on the sidelines of the event, the Prime Minister said the expressway was a “blessing of Maa Ganga,” underlining its cultural and developmental significance. He noted that the project would make travel smoother and more efficient for millions of people, strengthening infrastructure and fostering growth in Uttar Pradesh.
During his speech, Modi also turned his focus to the ongoing elections in West Bengal, particularly the second phase of polling. He highlighted the enthusiastic participation of voters, stating that large numbers of people were turning out to cast their votes, much like in the first phase.
“The second phase of voting is currently underway in Bengal, and reports indicate a strong voter turnout. Just like in the first phase, people are coming out in large numbers to cast their votes. Images of long queues are circulating on social media,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the elections were being conducted in a “fearless atmosphere,” which he described as a significant shift compared to previous decades. Calling it a reflection of a strengthening democracy, he praised the people of Bengal for being vigilant about their rights and actively participating in the democratic process.
He urged voters to continue participating with the same enthusiasm, referring to elections as a “festival of democracy” and encouraging maximum turnout before polling concluded.
Modi also expressed confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s electoral prospects, citing recent victories in state and civic polls as indicators of continued public support. He pointed to the party’s strong performance in the Bihar Assembly elections and civic polls in Gujarat, asserting that the BJP was on track to secure a “historic hat-trick” in the ongoing assembly elections across five states. He said the results would further energize India’s development trajectory.
In a sharp political attack, the Prime Minister criticized the Samajwadi Party and the Indian National Congress over their opposition to amendments in the Women’s Reservation law. Referring to the proposed Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment, he said the legislation aimed to ensure reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies starting from 2029.
According to Modi, the opposition by these parties demonstrated an “anti-women” stance. He accused them of attempting to stall progress and divide society, particularly criticizing the Samajwadi Party for opposing development initiatives in Uttar Pradesh.
“The amendment would enable a large number of women to represent the people as MPs and MLAs without reducing seats for any other category. However, the Samajwadi Party voted against this crucial bill,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s remarks combined development-focused messaging with sharp political commentary, as he sought to highlight both infrastructure achievements and electoral momentum while positioning the government’s legislative agenda as pro-women and pro-development.
