Fresh Cyclone Threat Looms Over Odisha; Low-Pressure System May Intensify After October 23

Odisha could face the prospect of another cyclone in October as a developing weather system over the Andaman Sea moves towards the Bay of Bengal. Forecast models have indicated the possibility of the system intensifying and approaching the Andhra Pradesh–Odisha coastline in the coming days. However, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) yet to issue an official update confirming cyclone formation, the system’s likely path, intensity and landfall location remain uncertain.

A cyclonic circulation that has entered the North Andaman Sea is moving west-north-westwards, drawing attention to the possibility of a fresh cyclonic system developing over the Bay of Bengal. Meteorologists are monitoring its progress as atmospheric conditions over the region evolve.

The next significant development could occur on October 23, when a low-pressure area is expected to form over the south-east Bay of Bengal and the adjoining east-central Bay. If conditions remain favourable, the system could gradually strengthen as it moves north-westwards.

Several international weather models have indicated the possibility of cyclone formation. Their projections suggest that the system could move towards the eastern coastline, potentially bringing Andhra Pradesh and Odisha into the zone requiring close monitoring.

Possible Coastal Approach Around October 27

According to the European weather model, the developing system could approach the coast around October 27, with a possible landfall on October 28. These dates, however, are based on preliminary model projections and should not be considered a confirmed forecast.

The system’s eventual movement will depend on the atmospheric conditions it encounters over the Bay of Bengal. Changes in its direction, development and intensity could alter the projected timeline and potential landfall area.

IMD Yet to Confirm Cyclone Formation

The India Meteorological Department has not issued an official update confirming the possibility of a cyclone so far. While experts believe favourable conditions could support further intensification, it remains too early to determine whether the system will develop into a cyclonic storm.

Meteorological assessments suggest that the system could strengthen from a deep depression into a cyclonic storm if environmental conditions support its development. Nevertheless, its maximum intensity and potential impact on the coast remain unknown.

Coming Days Crucial for Odisha

For Odisha, the immediate focus will be on the system’s development and whether subsequent forecasts establish a credible threat to coastal districts. A clearer picture is expected to emerge as the weather system evolves and forecasting agencies obtain more information about its movement.

At this stage, the possibility of a cyclone warrants attention but not alarm. The distinction between an early model projection and an official warning remains important, particularly when the system has yet to develop fully. Any assessment of potential landfall, rainfall or wind impact will need to be guided by updated forecasts from the IMD.

The coming days will therefore be critical in determining whether the developing system remains a low-pressure disturbance or intensifies into a cyclone capable of affecting Odisha and neighbouring coastal regions.
