Former Judge Giribala Singh Sent to 5-Day CBI Custody in Twisha Sharma Dowry Death Case

In a significant development in the alleged dowry death case of Noida resident Twisha Sharma, a Bhopal district court on Friday sent former district judge Giribala Singh, the victim’s mother-in-law, to five-day custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court also extended the CBI custody of Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh by another five days.

The case has drawn nationwide attention due to the serious allegations involved and the high-profile background of the accused. Giribala Singh was arrested by the CBI on Thursday, a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled her anticipatory bail.

According to reports, Giribala Singh’s counsel did not oppose the CBI’s plea seeking custodial interrogation. The former judge was produced before the court shortly after being questioned extensively by the probe agency in Bhopal.

Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, had married Bhopal-based Samarth Singh in December 2025. She died under suspicious circumstances on May 12, less than six months after her marriage. Following her death, Twisha’s family accused her husband and in-laws of subjecting her to harassment and cruelty over dowry demands.

The investigation is being conducted under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Giribala Singh has been booked under Section 80(2) relating to dowry death, Section 85 concerning cruelty by husband or relatives, and Section 3(5) dealing with acts committed in furtherance of common intention. She also faces charges under Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Samarth Singh had already been arrested earlier in connection with the case. The arrest of his mother has intensified the investigation, with the CBI now probing the sequence of events leading to Twisha’s death and examining allegations made by her family.

The Supreme Court of India had earlier this week transferred the investigation to the CBI, directing the agency to conduct an expeditious and impartial probe. The apex court also advised both the victim’s family and the accused persons against making public statements that could influence the ongoing investigation.

The case has sparked widespread public debate on dowry-related violence and accountability, particularly because one of the accused is a former judicial officer. Investigators are expected to examine digital evidence, witness statements, and financial transactions as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Twisha Sharma’s death is underway.
