In the last decade, India has witnessed a remarkable transformation in the landscape of gender equality and women’s empowerment, driven largely by the efforts of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). With Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm, the government has championed numerous initiatives at both the national and state levels that aim to uplift women across various spheres—social, economic, and political. Recognising that women constitute nearly half of India's population, these policies and programmes have been essential in fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Several flagship programmes have been rolled out by the Modi government to address critical issues faced by women, ranging from healthcare and education to financial independence and social dignity. One of the most notable among these is the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, launched in 2015. Designed to combat declining child sex ratios and promote education for girls, this initiative has been a catalyst for improving awareness about the importance of nurturing and educating the girl child. The programme focuses on enhancing access to education for girls, particularly in regions where gender disparities are most prevalent. Another transformative initiative is the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which aims to improve the quality of life for rural women by providing them with free LPG connections. By replacing harmful traditional cooking methods with cleaner fuel, Ujjwala Yojana has not only reduced health hazards for millions of women but has also freed up time that would otherwise be spent in collecting firewood, allowing them to pursue education or employment. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is another key national initiative that has bolstered women's financial inclusion. By enabling women to open bank accounts, it has empowered them to take control of their finances and access government subsidies directly. This scheme has particularly benefited women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, allowing them to step into the formal banking system for the first time and fostering a sense of financial security and independence.
At the state level, BJP-led governments have implemented schemes that cater to the specific needs of women in their respective regions. For example, in Chhattisgarh, the Mahtari Vandan Yojana has been introduced to improve maternal health by providing financial assistance to pregnant women, ensuring better prenatal care and nutrition. This initiative aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, which remain a challenge in many rural areas. By focusing on maternal health, the scheme ensures that women receive the medical support they need during pregnancy and childbirth. It underscores the BJP's commitment to safeguarding women and ensuring that they have the resources to seek justice. The BJP’s approach to women’s empowerment has been comprehensive, touching upon various aspects of women’s lives. Beyond the specific schemes, the party has focused on increasing women’s participation in politics and governance. The Women's Reservation Bill, which aims to reserve 33% of seats in Parliament and state legislatures for women, is a significant step in this direction. By ensuring greater political representation for women, the BJP hopes to create a governance structure that is more inclusive and responsive to the needs of women. While the progress made in the last decade is commendable, challenges remain in ensuring that the benefits of these initiatives reach every woman, especially in the most marginalised communities. Societal norms and cultural barriers continue to hinder women’s empowerment in many parts of India. However, the BJP’s consistent efforts to implement policies that address these issues reflect a long-term commitment to building a society where women can thrive. In conclusion, the BJP, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has laid a solid foundation for women’s empowerment through a combination of national policies and state-specific schemes. From improving access to education and healthcare to fostering financial independence and political representation, the party has taken significant strides toward creating a more equitable India.
