The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the much-awaited schedule for the Delhi Assembly elections. In a press conference held today, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar revealed that voting will take place on February 5, while the counting of votes and the declaration of results will follow on February 8.
The election for the 70-member Delhi Assembly comes as the current term nears its end on February 23. As has been the tradition in the national capital, the polls will be conducted in a single phase, ensuring a smooth and streamlined electoral process.
During the press conference, Mr. Kumar highlighted a significant milestone in India’s electoral journey. “Electoral rolls were released yesterday. We are crossing 99 crore voters... We are going to be a nation of one billion voters very soon, which will be another record in voting,” he said.
He also emphasized the global significance of 2024 as a year of elections, pointing out that two-thirds of the world’s population in democracies will be voting in various polls throughout the year.
The upcoming election is shaping up to be a high-stakes contest. The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is seeking a third consecutive term, riding on its performance in governance and welfare schemes.
