In a startling statement that has ignited controversy, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal legislative assembly, urged tourists to avoid Muslim-majority areas for their safety. His comments came shortly after an invitation extended by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, which she accepted.
Adhikari's remarks were direct and provocative, advising Bengalis to steer clear of destinations where Muslims are in a majority, particularly citing the recent Pahalgam terror attack. He emphasized, "Don’t go to places where there are Muslim-habitats. If you want to go to Jammu and Kashmir, go to Jammu. Avoid Muslim-dominated destinations."

"The LoP is speaking like a terrorist. The terrorists wanted to cripple the tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir, which forms the UT’s backbone. The LoP is speaking in the same lines. We were shocked to hear this statement of the BJP legislator," Panja stated in a press briefing.
