BJP Targets TMC in Bengal Battle as Modi Promises Law, Order and Accountability

In a sharp escalation of political rhetoric ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of being in “panic mode” due to the growing support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. Addressing a large election rally in Purba Bardhaman, the Prime Minister laid out an aggressive roadmap focused on law and order, anti-corruption measures, and welfare assurances.

Modi asserted that a BJP government in West Bengal would prioritize the safety and security of women, promising strict action against those involved in political violence. He alleged that the current environment in the state has been marred by intimidation and lawlessness, and assured voters that accountability would be enforced under BJP rule.

A key highlight of his address was the promise to tackle illegal infiltration. The Prime Minister stated that all infiltrators would be identified and expelled, adding that individuals and networks facilitating their settlement would also face stringent legal action. He underscored that even developed nations maintain a firm stance against illegal immigration, framing the issue as one of national security and governance.

In a direct attack on the TMC’s governance record, Modi announced that the BJP would release a comprehensive White Paper detailing alleged corruption and the state of law and order in West Bengal. He further revealed plans to constitute an inquiry commission, headed by a retired Supreme Court judge, to investigate incidents of political violence. According to him, this would ensure that “every TMC goon, syndicate, and corrupt MLA or minister” is held accountable under the law.

At the same time, Modi sought to reassure voters that welfare schemes introduced under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would not be discontinued. Instead, he said the BJP would focus on eliminating corruption and ensuring that benefits reach the intended recipients without leakages. He also pledged that the Ayushman Bharat scheme would be implemented in the state during the first cabinet meeting if the BJP comes to power.

Targeting what he described as the entrenched “syndicate system,” the Prime Minister promised to introduce a transparent tendering process across sectors. He alleged that TMC-backed groups are engaged in internal conflicts over control of lucrative sand mining operations and referred to the Katwa blast as an example of the consequences of such alleged rivalries. Under a BJP government, he said, strict action would be taken to curb criminal networks and restore order.

The political stakes are high as West Bengal prepares for assembly elections scheduled in two phases on April 23 and 29, with the counting of votes set for May 4. With both the BJP and TMC intensifying their campaigns, the state is witnessing a fiercely contested battle that is likely to shape its political trajectory in the years to come.
