108 Maoist Cadres Lay Down Arms in Bastar, Major Boost to Anti-Insurgency Efforts

108 Maoist Cadres Lay Down Arms in Bastar, Major Boost to Anti-Insurgency Efforts

In a significant development in India’s fight against left-wing extremism, 108 members associated with the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) have surrendered and chosen to return to civilian life under the “Poona Margem; Rehabilitation to Regeneration” initiative. The mass surrender, considered one of the largest in recent years, reflects a growing shift from armed struggle to rehabilitation and peaceful reintegration.

The surrender programme is being organised at the Bastar Division Headquarters in Jagdalpur in the state of Chhattisgarh. Senior officials from the police and central security forces, representatives of the district administration, and members of civil society are attending the ceremony, highlighting the collective effort to encourage insurgents to abandon violence and rejoin society.

Authorities say the surrender involves cadres who were previously linked to the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee, an influential regional formation of the banned Maoist outfit Communist Party of India (Maoist). Their decision to give up arms is being viewed as an important step in weakening the operational network of Maoist groups active in the forested regions of central India.

Officials stressed that the Poona Margem programme is designed not only to facilitate surrender but also to support the long-term rehabilitation of former insurgents. Through livelihood assistance, skill development, and social support mechanisms, the initiative aims to help them rebuild their lives and integrate into the social and economic mainstream.

The surrender has also produced a major operational breakthrough for security forces. Information shared by the former cadres has led to the recovery of a massive cache of weapons, ammunition, and other materials that were previously hidden across several locations in the Bastar range, particularly in districts such as Bijapur. Authorities have described the seizure as the largest of its kind in India’s anti-Naxal operations.

As part of the event, the recovered materials will be displayed at the Range Headquarters in Jagdalpur. Officials say the exhibition is meant to demonstrate both the scale of the recovered arsenal and the impact of the decision by these cadres to abandon the insurgency.

Security officials noted that the success of the initiative lies in combining strong law-enforcement action with a humane rehabilitation policy. By dismantling militant networks while offering a credible path back to normal life, authorities hope to further reduce the influence of Maoist groups in the region.

The surrender of 108 cadres and the recovery of large quantities of arms are being seen as a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to stabilise the Bastar region. Observers believe the development could encourage more insurgents to surrender, marking a crucial step toward lasting peace and development in one of India’s most conflict-affected areas.
