Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday launched a fierce verbal assault on Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi over his controversial remarks praising Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. The UP CM demanded Azmi’s expulsion from the Samajwadi Party and even questioned his right to remain in India, escalating the political row over Azmi’s comments.
Speaking in the Assembly, Adityanath said, “Remove that person from the Samajwadi Party and send him to UP, we will do his treatment.” His remarks came in response to Azmi’s recent statement glorifying Aurangzeb, a Mughal emperor often criticized for his oppressive policies, including religious intolerance and the destruction of Hindu temples.
Adityanath further sharpened his attack by invoking the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the revered Maratha warrior king who fiercely resisted Aurangzeb’s rule. “The person who feels ashamed about the heritage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and considers Aurangzeb his idol, does he have the right to stay in our country? Samajwadi Party should answer this,” the Chief Minister said.
The controversy began when Abu Azmi, a senior Samajwadi Party leader from Maharashtra, reportedly praised Aurangzeb, calling him a “great ruler” and dismissing criticisms of his reign. Azmi’s remarks sparked outrage among political leaders and social groups, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, where Aurangzeb’s legacy remains a deeply polarizing topic.
Adityanath’s response reflects the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) broader narrative of championing Hindu pride and historical figures like Shivaji, while condemning Mughal rulers like Aurangzeb, who are often portrayed as tyrants in Indian history textbooks. The UP CM’s call for Azmi’s expulsion from the Samajwadi Party also underscores the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and the SP in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state.
The Samajwadi Party, however, has yet to issue an official response to Adityanath’s demand. Meanwhile, Azmi has defended his remarks, claiming that his statements were taken out of context and that he was merely highlighting Aurangzeb’s administrative capabilities.
The row has reignited debates over historical narratives and their political implications in contemporary India. While some argue that historical figures like Aurangzeb should be evaluated in a nuanced manner, others view any praise for the Mughal ruler as an affront to India’s cultural and religious heritage.
