Women’s Reservation Row Intensifies: BJP Hits Back at Congress Over ‘Delimitation Misleading’ Claims

A political storm has erupted over the fate of the Women’s Reservation Bill, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress trading sharp accusations over its implications and implementation.

Senior BJP leader and Member of Parliament Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday strongly criticized Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for her remarks against the government, calling them misleading and politically motivated. Addressing the media in New Delhi, Prasad clarified that any revision of seats in the Lok Sabha or state legislative assemblies cannot take place without a formal delimitation exercise.

He explained that delimitation—redrawing electoral boundaries—is a constitutional requirement and cannot be bypassed. Given that conducting a nationwide census is a time-intensive process, he noted, the government had indicated that delimitation could be based on the last published census to avoid delays in implementing women’s reservation.

Joining the BJP’s offensive, Union Minister Smriti Irani accused the Congress of betraying the aspirations of women across the country. She argued that the opposition’s stance had effectively derailed a historic opportunity to enhance women’s political representation. Irani highlighted the NDA government’s initiatives, including the introduction of India’s first gender budget framework, as evidence of its commitment to women’s empowerment.

Taking a swipe at the Congress’s past record, she claimed that during its tenure, millions of women were excluded from basic financial and sanitation facilities. According to her, around 25 crore women lacked access to bank accounts, while nearly 11 crore were deprived of toilets—issues the current government has sought to address through targeted schemes.

Earlier in the day, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had described the bill’s defeat as a “significant victory” for democracy. She alleged that the government’s approach was an attempt to manipulate the federal structure and consolidate political advantage through delimitation linked to the 2011 Census. She urged the NDA government to reintroduce and implement the Women’s Reservation Bill that had been unanimously passed in 2023 with cross-party support.

The Congress leader further contended that combining delimitation with women’s reservation could allow the ruling party to redraw constituencies in its favor, thereby undermining fair representation.

The ongoing clash underscores deeper disagreements over the intersection of electoral reforms and gender representation. While the BJP maintains that procedural requirements like delimitation are essential for implementing the quota, the Congress insists that the process must not be used as a political tool.

As the debate intensifies, the future of the Women’s Reservation Bill remains uncertain, with both sides seeking to frame the narrative ahead of crucial political battles.
