A disturbing incident in Karnataka’s Hubballi has sparked political outrage after a BJP woman worker alleged she was stripped and assaulted by police officers during her arrest. Videos and images circulating on social media show the woman surrounded by male and female police personnel inside a bus, leading to widespread condemnation from BJP supporters and calls for accountability.
According to initial reports, the woman was taken into custody by officers from the Keshwapur police station following a complaint filed by Congress corporator Suvarna Kalkuntla. The arrest is linked to ongoing political tensions between BJP and Congress workers during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in the Keshwapur Rana area.
The woman, reportedly a former Congress worker who recently joined the BJP, was accused of assisting officials in removing certain voters’ names from the list—a charge that earlier led to clashes between party workers.
Hubballi City Police Commissioner N Shashikumar has firmly denied allegations of misconduct by police personnel. In an official statement, he explained that the woman began removing her own clothes after being placed in the police van.
“When she was arrested and placed in the police van, she began taking off her clothes herself. There were eight female police personnel present in the van, including a woman PSI. She removed all her clothes and threw them away, completely undressing herself,” the Commissioner stated. He added that with the help of local residents, police provided her with another set of clothes before completing arrest formalities.
Commissioner Shashikumar, who is currently investigating the matter at the Keshwapur police station, also noted that the woman has multiple cases registered against her.
The incident has intensified political rivalry in the region, with both parties filing complaints against each other. BJP supporters have expressed anger over the treatment of the woman, while Congress representatives have pointed to her alleged involvement in voter list irregularities.
Senior police officials have assured a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the events that followed. The case highlights ongoing tensions in Karnataka’s political landscape, where allegations of voter list manipulation and partisan conflicts periodically surface.
As investigations proceed, the incident raises important questions about police protocols during arrests involving women, the treatment of political workers in custody, and the need for transparent inquiry mechanisms to address such serious allegations.
