Veteran Actor Pankaj Dheer, Revered for His Portrayal of Karna, Succumbs to Cancer at 68

The Indian television and film industry is in mourning following the passing of veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, who left an indelible mark on audiences with his powerful performance as Karna in the iconic television series Mahabharat in the late 1980s. The actor, 68, died on October 15 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Dheer had been unwell for a considerable period. According to reports, his battle with cancer relapsed a few months ago, following which he underwent a major surgery. Despite the medical intervention, the actor ultimately succumbed to the disease.

The news was first confirmed by his colleague and friend, actor Firoz Khan, who played Arjun opposite Dheer's Karna in the epic series. Khan took to his Instagram Story to share a poignant photo with Pankaj and offer his condolences. He penned a heartfelt note, remembering Dheer as a "Gentleman!!!", writing, "Bids goodbye Will miss you PD. Stay blessed."

An official statement was also released by CINTAA (Cine & TV Artistes’ Association) on October 15, confirming the tragic news. The statement read, "With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform you of the passing of our Trust’s erstwhile Chairman and CINTAA's former Hon. General Secretary, Shri Pankaj Dheer ji, on 15th October 2025." It further informed that the last rites would be held on the same day at 4:30 pm in Vile Parle, Mumbai.

Pankaj Dheer's career spanned several decades, encompassing roles in numerous films and television shows. However, it was his nuanced and empathetic portrayal of the tragic hero Karna—a character bound by loyalty and fate—that earned him a permanent place in the hearts of millions. His performance is still remembered as one of the most definitive interpretations of the complex character.

While the industry and fans have begun pouring in their tributes, his son, actor Nikitin Dheer, known for his work in films like Chennai Express and Sooryavanshi, is yet to make a public statement or offer his condolences on social media.

Pankaj Dheer's passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a rich legacy of work that continues to inspire. He will be remembered not just for the characters he brought to life on screen, but also for his contributions behind the scenes to the artiste community.
