US Singer Mary Millben Calls on Indian Youth to Oppose CJP, Alleges US Funding

American singer Mary Millben’s appeal to young Indians to peacefully oppose the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has added an international dimension to an already contentious political confrontation in New Delhi. Her allegations that the party receives financial support from US-based donors opposed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi raise questions about foreign influence in domestic politics. However, these claims must be examined separately from the opposition’s demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. At the heart of the controversy lies a larger democratic question: how can political disagreements be addressed without undermining the legitimacy of peaceful dissent or making unverified allegations a substitute for evidence?

Millben, a 41-year-old American singer and actress known in India for performing the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana, and the devotional song Om Jai Jagdish Hare, made her remarks on Wednesday amid protests by opposition parties and CJP supporters in the national capital.

She alleged that CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke and his associates receive financial backing from US-based donors who oppose Modi’s leadership. According to Millben, certain donors follow an international pattern of identifying individuals educated in the United States, radicalising them and supporting political movements in their home countries to destabilise conservative governments.

These are serious allegations, but their political significance should not be confused with proof of wrongdoing. No supporting financial records, donor identities or independent verification have been provided in the information available here to establish the claims. Establishing whether a political organisation receives foreign funding, and whether such funding violates any law, requires documentary evidence and scrutiny by the appropriate authorities.

Foreign financial influence in domestic politics is a legitimate subject of public concern. Political organisations must comply with applicable funding regulations, disclose information where legally required and remain accountable for their sources of support. Yet the same standards of evidence must apply regardless of whether the organisation concerned supports or opposes the government.

Modi’s Leadership and the Appeal to Young Indians

Defending the Prime Minister, Millben argued that Modi would not bow to what she described as disruptive forces. She referred to his long political career, including 12 years as Prime Minister and three consecutive electoral victories, while urging young Indians not to remain silent.

Her appeal reflects the international support Modi has attracted among sections of the Indian diaspora and foreign admirers. His leadership, electoral record and emphasis on national development have made him an influential political figure beyond India’s borders. Millben’s intervention places her among those who view the political contest surrounding Modi as part of a broader debate over leadership, national identity and governance.
