US-Iran Reach Deal to Ease Hormuz Blockade Amid Rising Gulf Tensions

The United States and Iran have reportedly reached a preliminary agreement aimed at easing the American naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the gradual reopening of the crucial maritime route, according to reports by Al Arabiya. The development comes after days of escalating tensions that disrupted global energy markets and raised fears of a wider regional conflict.

Sources cited by Al Arabiya said the understanding was reached on Thursday following intensive negotiations between Washington and Tehran. The agreement is expected to allow the phased release of commercial vessels stranded in the Strait after Iran blocked the strategic waterway during the ongoing US-Iran confrontation.

“Agreements have been reached regarding easing the blockade in exchange for the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The coming hours will witness the release of ships stuck in the strait,” sources reportedly told the broadcaster.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints, carrying nearly 20 percent of global crude oil supplies. Any disruption in the route has immediate consequences for international energy prices and global trade.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced the temporary suspension of “Project Freedom”, a US-led military operation launched earlier this week to escort commercial vessels through the Strait.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump claimed that “great progress” had been achieved toward a “complete and final agreement” with Iranian representatives. He added that the operation would be paused temporarily to provide diplomatic efforts a chance to succeed.

“Based on the request of Pakistan and other countries, the tremendous military success that we have had during the campaign against Iran and additionally the fact that great progress has been made toward a complete and final agreement with representatives of Iran, we have mutually agreed that, while the blockade will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the agreement can be finalised and signed,” Trump said.

Project Freedom had been launched on Monday after several cargo ships became stranded due to the closure of the Strait. Trump first announced the mission on Sunday, after which the US Central Command initiated naval escort operations in the Gulf region.

However, the military deployment sharply heightened tensions in the area. The United Arab Emirates alleged that some of its vessels were attacked by Iranian forces near the Strait, while the United States claimed it had destroyed several Iranian small boats operating in the region.

The latest understanding between Washington and Tehran has sparked cautious optimism in global markets, with analysts hoping that the reopening of the Strait could stabilize oil supplies and prevent further escalation in the Gulf. However, observers note that the situation remains fragile, and the success of the agreement will depend on whether both sides adhere to the terms in the coming days.
