The United States and Saudi Arabia have carried out joint precision strikes against Iran-aligned militant groups in Iraq, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions involving Tehran-backed forces. The US military announced on Tuesday that the coordinated operation targeted militant infrastructure allegedly linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), following a wave of drone attacks aimed at US troops and Saudi energy facilities.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American and Saudi forces conducted the strikes on July 28 against multiple weapons storage and logistics sites in eastern Iraq. Washington claims the targeted groups were acting under the direction of the IRGC and were involved in planning and executing attacks against US military personnel stationed in the region as well as critical Saudi energy infrastructure.
CENTCOM said the military action came in response to more than 30 drone attacks allegedly launched by Iran-backed groups over the previous 72 hours. The US military stated that while the attacks represented a serious threat, none of the drone strikes aimed at American forces were successful.
In a statement, CENTCOM said, “U.S. Central Command and the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces conducted precision strikes in Iraq, July 28,” adding that the operation targeted Iran-aligned groups allegedly directed by the IRGC to attack US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.
The coordinated strikes involved US and Saudi fighter aircraft hitting multiple facilities believed to be used for storing weapons, coordinating logistics, and supporting militant operations. Military officials did not disclose the exact number of targets struck or the type of aircraft involved.
The US military has not released information regarding casualties or the extent of damage inflicted during the operation. Iraqi authorities have also not issued an immediate statement on the strikes or their impact.
The operation represents one of the most direct military responses in recent months to attacks attributed by Washington to Iran-backed armed groups operating in Iraq. It also underscores the growing security cooperation between the United States and Saudi Arabia amid concerns over regional stability.
The latest developments come amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, with Washington accusing Tehran of supporting proxy groups across the Middle East that have repeatedly targeted US military installations and allied infrastructure.
