In a significant development aimed at bolstering India's railway infrastructure, the Union Cabinet has greenlit two ambitious projects under the Ministry of Railways, totaling ₹6,405 crore. These projects, expected to enhance connectivity and operational efficiency across several states, were announced by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi following a recent Cabinet meeting.
The first project, the Koderma – Barkakana Doubling project, spans a distance of 133 kilometers in Jharkhand. This endeavor aims to provide enhanced connectivity to 938 villages and a population of approximately 15 lakhs. The project is set to connect four key districts in Jharkhand – Koderma, Chatra, Hazaribagh, and Ramgarh. Notably, the railway section will traverse through a major coal-producing area of the state, promising significant economic benefits alongside improved transportation links.
The second approved project, the Ballari – Chikjajur Doubling line, covers a distance of 185 kilometers. This initiative will connect the Mangalore port to Secunderabad, facilitating smoother transportation and logistical operations across Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The project route spans through the districts of Ballari and Chitradurga in Karnataka, as well as Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh.
Together, these projects are set to expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 318 kilometers, benefiting a total of seven districts spread across Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. The enhanced railway infrastructure is expected to significantly boost mobility and operational efficiency, thereby improving service reliability for passengers and freight alike.
The increased line capacity will also contribute to economic growth by facilitating easier access to markets, resources, and ports. Additionally, the improved connectivity is projected to positively impact over 1,400 villages with a combined population exceeding 28 lakhs, thereby fostering socio-economic development in these regions.
The approval of these two major railway projects underscores the government's commitment to modernizing India's infrastructure and fostering regional development through enhanced connectivity. With a focus on efficiency and expansion, these initiatives are poised to play a pivotal role in India's journey towards a more integrated and robust transportation network.
This move is expected to not only improve the operational capabilities of Indian Railways but also stimulate economic activities across the states involved, paving the way for inclusive growth and development in the coming years.
