UN Takes Firm Stand on Attacks Against Hindus in Bangladesh

The United Nations has adopted a stern stance concerning the recent attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, condemning the severe persecution of minority communities amid the ongoing violence. Reports from Bangladesh indicate a wave of atrocities including rape, murder, arson, and vandalism targeting Hindu communities during the unrest. In response, a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the organization's unequivocal opposition to any form of violence or attacks based on ethnicity.

Deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq stated on Thursday, "It is clear that we want to ensure that the recent violence in Bangladesh is brought under control. Certainly, we are against any attacks or incitement to violence based on ethnicity." He addressed questions related to Secretary-General Guterres' reaction to the incidents involving attacks on Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh. Following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday and her departure for India, violence has escalated with widespread incidents of vandalism in Hindu temples, homes, and commercial establishments.

Haq noted Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus' appointment as interim government chief and remarked on the UN's "inclusive process of government formation." He stated, "We hope for stability. Any indication of peace is a good thing." When asked if Secretary-General Guterres had congratulated Yunus or spoken with him on the phone, Haq replied that Guterres had not spoken with him, but the UN's local coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwynne Louise, attended the swearing-in ceremony.

"Definitely, she and the country team are actively ensuring that local-level changes are peaceful," Haq said. Requests to the UN in recent weeks to investigate the killings in Bangladesh.
