Tamil Nadu politics witnessed fresh turmoil on Tuesday after Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was detained by the state police shortly after a case was registered against him over a controversial remark made during a speech on the Cauvery water-sharing dispute. The statement, which many interpreted as an indirect reference to actor Trisha, triggered widespread outrage and led to protests by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and criticism from several political parties.
The controversy stems from a speech delivered by Udhayanidhi at a rally in Thanjavur on Monday, where he criticised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay over his handling of the long-standing Cauvery river water dispute. During the address, sections of the audience repeatedly chanted actor Trisha's name, referring to her widely speculated friendship with Vijay. Responding to the chants, Udhayanidhi briefly paused, smiled and remarked that whether the water reached elsewhere or not, it should "reach there," before adding that he was referring to the river. The statement was widely perceived by opponents as a sexual innuendo, sparking a major political controversy.
Following the registration of the case, police detained Udhayanidhi and escorted him away in a police vehicle. Reacting to the action, the DMK leader maintained that he had done nothing wrong and insisted that he had not mentioned anyone other than the chief minister in his speech.
"I did not name anyone. The police action is an act of political vendetta. Ultimately, the courts will decide the matter," Udhayanidhi said while being taken into custody.
The remarks have drawn criticism from across the political spectrum, with opposition parties accusing the DMK leader of lowering the standards of public discourse. Leaders from multiple parties described the statement as inappropriate for a senior political figure and called for accountability.
Meanwhile, TVK workers staged a massive protest in Chennai, condemning Udhayanidhi's remarks. Demonstrators gathered outside his residence, raising slogans against the DMK leader and demanding action. Several TVK cadres were detained after attempting to breach security barricades erected by the police.
TVK MLA Rhevanth Charan strongly criticised the remarks, calling them unbecoming of a public representative. He alleged that the DMK had resorted to provocative statements after its campaign over the Cauvery issue failed to attract significant public support.
According to Charan, the ruling party was prioritising sensationalism over addressing substantive public concerns, warning that such political conduct would further erode the DMK's credibility among voters.
The BJP's Tamil Nadu unit also condemned the remarks. State BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy termed the comments offensive and questioned the silence of former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over the issue. He demanded strict legal action against Udhayanidhi, arguing that it would send a strong message against inappropriate conduct by public representatives.
The controversy has once again shifted political attention from the Cauvery water dispute to the quality of political discourse in Tamil Nadu. While the legal proceedings against Udhayanidhi are expected to continue, the issue has intensified the political rivalry between the DMK, TVK and the BJP, with each party accusing the other of attempting to exploit the controversy for political gains.
As the matter moves toward the courts, the incident is likely to remain a major flashpoint in Tamil Nadu politics, with debates continuing over political accountability, freedom of speech and the standards expected from elected representatives.
