A security scare unfolded in Mumbai after two men were detained near the venue of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled event, with police recovering a gun and allegedly finding a fake identity card claiming affiliation with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The incident took place late Monday night during a security protocol drill at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), where Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026.
According to police sources, security personnel noticed a man behaving suspiciously while moving around the event venue. Mumbai Police subsequently detained him along with his alleged bodyguard for questioning.
During the security checks, police recovered a firearm from the second man. The first detainee, identified as 24-year-old Rohan Parekh, reportedly claimed that he was an official from the Prime Minister’s Office. However, further verification allegedly revealed that the PMO identity card in his possession was fake.
The discovery of the firearm and purportedly forged government credentials prompted the Mumbai Police to launch a detailed investigation into how the two men managed to reach the venue and what their intentions were.
Given the seriousness of the incident, the Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation. The two men are being questioned to establish their identities, background and possible motive for entering a high-security event location with a weapon and allegedly fraudulent credentials.
Investigators are also examining their mobile phones, identity documents and other belongings as part of the probe. Police are expected to verify the authenticity of the documents and determine whether the two men acted independently or were linked to any wider network.
Mumbai Police said further legal action would be taken after the allegations are verified during the course of the investigation.
The security scare comes ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the Global Fintech Fest 2026, one of the world’s major annual gatherings focused on financial technology and digital finance.
With the Prime Minister scheduled to inaugurate the conference, security arrangements around the venue have been intensified. The detention of two individuals during a security drill, coupled with the recovery of a firearm and alleged fake PMO credentials, is therefore being treated as a matter of significant concern.
The Crime Branch investigation is now expected to establish how the suspects gained access to the area, why one of them allegedly presented himself as a PMO official and whether the weapon was being carried with any specific intent.
Authorities are continuing to question the suspects and examine the evidence before deciding on the next course of legal action.
