In a major political breakthrough in Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Friday secured the crucial support required to stake claim for forming the government in the state. The development comes after Left parties — the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) — decided to extend their support to TVK.
According to party sources, the CPI Working Committee and the CPI(M) State Committee formally resolved to back TVK in the ongoing government formation process. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) also joined the alliance, with its two MLAs deciding to support the Vijay-led party.
With the backing of the Left parties and the VCK legislators, TVK has significantly strengthened its position amid the continuing political deadlock in Tamil Nadu following the Assembly election results. Leaders of the CPI, CPI(M), and VCK are expected to jointly address a press conference at 4:30 pm on Friday to officially announce their support for TVK.
The latest development is being viewed as a turning point in the state’s post-election political landscape, where no single party or alliance had initially managed to secure a clear majority. Political observers believe the support from the Left parties and VCK could pave the way for a stable coalition government under Vijay’s leadership.
Meanwhile, TVK chief Vijay is scheduled to meet Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Friday evening to discuss government formation, official sources said. This will be Vijay’s third meeting with the Governor this week regarding staking claim to form the government.
Sources within TVK indicated that Vijay is expected to present letters of support from allied parties and formally outline the coalition’s majority strength during the meeting. The party leadership is optimistic that the Governor will take note of the newly consolidated numbers and invite TVK to form the government.
The political developments have intensified activity across Tamil Nadu, with all eyes now on the Governor’s next move and the possibility of Vijay emerging as the state’s next Chief Minister.
