In a devastating incident that has exposed glaring lapses in construction site safety, the death of a 27-year-old software engineer in Noida has triggered a massive administrative and police crackdown. The victim, Yuvraj Mehta, lost his life in a harrowing manner after his car plunged into a water-filled pit at an under-construction site in Sector 150, leading to immediate arrests, the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), and a state-mandated safety overhaul.
The accident occurred on the foggy intervening night of Friday and Saturday. Yuvraj Mehta's car skidded, broke through a drain boundary, and fell into a deep, waterlogged excavation pit meant for the basement of a commercial complex. What followed was a nightmare. For approximately 90 minutes, trapped in his vehicle, Mehta desperately pleaded for help as eyewitnesses, police, and initial rescue teams stood helpless, unable to mount an effective operation in the complex, slush-filled site.
His body was recovered only after a prolonged search involving the fire department, police, SDRF, and NDRF. The car itself was retrieved three days later, with officials citing extreme challenges due to thick slush and iron reinforcements in the pit.
Swift Legal Action and Arrests
The tragedy quickly translated into legal action. Based on a complaint by the victim's father, Raj Kumar Mehta, who alleged negligence by authorities and builders, police filed an FIR against two real estate developers—MZ Wiztown Planners and Lotus Greens. The charges included culpable homicide not amounting to murder, among others.
The action intensified on Tuesday with the arrest of Abhay Kumar, the director of MZ Wiztown Planners (also identified as Amsed Wishtown Pvt. Ltd.), from Sector 150. "Abhay Kumar, the director of MZ Wiztown Planners and one of the accused in the case, has been arrested," confirmed Additional Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Hemant Upadhyay. A case has also been registered against the firms and Kumar.
Government Mandates Stringent Safety Audit
Moving beyond immediate arrests, the Yogi Adityanath government has ordered a comprehensive safety review. In a significant directive, authorities have mandated a 24x7 safety audit of all under-construction and incomplete sites across Noida. The order states that strict action will be taken against any project found violating mandated safety standards.
This systemic intervention aims to prevent such tragedies, highlighting a shift from reactive measures to proactive, continuous oversight. The move acknowledges the fatal consequences of unsecured sites, especially those with deep excavations left exposed and inadequately barricaded.
SIT Begins Probe
