TMC Splits in Bengal as Ritabrata Banerjee Emerges as Leader of Opposition

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered a major political setback on Wednesday as the party witnessed a significant split in West Bengal, raising serious questions about its internal unity and leadership structure. The development comes as expelled party leader Ritabrata Banerjee formally emerged as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, claiming the support of a substantial section of TMC legislators.

Addressing the media after submitting the required documents, Ritabrata Banerjee asserted that the newly formed TMC legislature group consists of 58 MLAs who were elected on the party's symbol. He further claimed that two more legislators are likely to join the faction in the coming days, strengthening its position within the Assembly.

Banerjee also announced the leadership team of the legislature party. According to him, Javed Khan, Sandeepan Saha, Sabina Yasmin and Shiuli Saha have been appointed as deputy leaders of the TMC legislature party. The announcement marks a significant organizational restructuring within the party's legislative wing and signals a challenge to the existing leadership.

The political drama unfolded shortly after the faction submitted its letter to the Assembly authorities. Expelled TMC leader Sandipan Saha confirmed that the formal process had been completed and that the office designated for the Leader of Opposition had already been allotted.

"We have just submitted the letter. The room designated for the Leader of the Opposition has been officially allotted. The LoP is currently seated there," Saha said while speaking to reporters.

In a notable statement, Saha indicated that despite the split, the rebel faction still wished to maintain a respectful relationship with TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee. "It is our desire that Mamata Didi continues to serve as our advisor, offering us her counsel so that we, along with the LoP and the Chief Whip, can effectively steer the party within the Legislative Assembly," he remarked.

However, Saha did not spare party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee from criticism. Holding him partly responsible for the crisis engulfing the party, he said the current situation reflected failures in leadership and management.

"The sorry state to which the party has been reduced, in some measure, is a failure on the part of Abhishek Banerjee. After all, if you claim credit when things go well, you must also accept responsibility when things go wrong," Saha stated.

The rebellion represents one of the most serious internal challenges faced by Mamata Banerjee's party in recent years. Political observers believe the development could have far-reaching consequences for the balance of power in West Bengal politics and the future of the TMC.

While the rebel camp appears confident about its numerical strength, the official TMC leadership is yet to issue a detailed response to the claims made by Ritabrata Banerjee and his supporters. The coming days are expected to be crucial as both sides seek to consolidate support and establish their legitimacy within the state's political landscape.

The split has added a new dimension to West Bengal's political scenario, potentially reshaping opposition dynamics inside the Assembly and setting the stage for an intense battle over the future direction of the Trinamool Congress.
