A political controversy erupted in Kolkata’s Tangra area on Thursday after a large number of voter ID cards, Aadhaar cards and ration cards were allegedly recovered from a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) office. The incident has triggered sharp reactions from opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, who accused the ruling party of attempting to prevent voters from exercising their democratic rights during the recentlTMC Office in Kolkata’s Tangra Under Scanner After Recovery of Voter ID, Aadhaar and Ration Cardsy concluded elections.
According to police officials, nearly 300 identity documents were found inside an almirah at a TMC office located on Tangra Second Lane in ward number 57. The recovery came days after the election results were declared on May 4.
Soon after the documents were discovered, BJP workers reached the spot and alleged that the cards had been deliberately hidden to stop people from casting their votes during the elections. The party demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and accused the TMC of electoral malpractice.
“Everything is coming out in the open now. These cards were allegedly withheld so that people could not cast their votes,” a BJP member alleged while speaking to reporters at the scene.
The discovery also led to anger and confusion among local residents, some of whom claimed they had lost their identity documents before polling day. One such resident, Soumen Vicky Das, said he was shocked to find his missing Aadhaar card among the recovered documents.
“My Aadhaar card had disappeared before the polls. I came here and recovered it from among the seized documents,” he told media personnel.
The recovery of identity documents from a political party office has raised serious questions among local residents regarding the handling of personal documents and the conduct of election-related activities in the area. Several locals alleged that the TMC office had remained largely deserted after the election results were announced.
Residents claimed that no party workers had been seen at the office since May 4, adding to the suspicion surrounding the recovery. The incident quickly drew crowds to the locality, with police personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
Police said the recovered documents have been seized and an inquiry has been initiated to ascertain how such a large number of voter-related identity cards ended up inside the party office. Officials are also expected to verify whether the documents belong to local residents and if any complaints regarding missing cards had been filed earlier.
The incident has intensified the political atmosphere in West Bengal, where allegations and counter-allegations between the ruling TMC and opposition BJP have remained frequent following the elections. While the BJP has demanded strict action and an impartial probe, no official response from the TMC leadership had been issued till the filing of this report.
The matter is likely to further escalate political tensions in the state as opposition parties seek accountability over the recovery of sensitive identity documents from a political office.
